The Cameo Island bar stays open until midnight in peak season — catch the sunset from the island's deck with a cocktail, then swim back to the mainland beach as the stars come out.
Agios Sostis Beach — Sunset Capital of Southern Zakynthos
Few beach experiences in the Ionian match the ritual of watching the sun set over the water from Agios Sostis. This southeastern beach is directly connected to Cameo Island — a tiny pine-covered islet reached by a short wooden bridge — which has become one of Zakynthos’ most iconic sunset spots and a venue for the kind of languid beach-bar evenings that make Greek summers memorable.
What Awaits You
A clean, sandy beach on the southern coast, sheltered and relatively calm, with turquoise shallow water and a view across the bay toward Laganas. But the defining feature is the wooden footbridge that connects the beach to Cameo Island — a small rocky outcrop covered in Mediterranean pines, with a bar, deck seating, and an unobstructed western view that delivers some of the most photographed sunsets in all of Zakynthos.
The beach itself has sunbed and umbrella rentals, good swimming, and is popular with both families by day and couples by evening. The atmosphere shifts noticeably as the day progresses: families pack up around 6 PM, and by 7 PM the crowd is younger, the music from the Cameo bar drifts across the water, and the western sky starts to do extraordinary things.
Cameo Island
Cross the bridge (always free) and you’re on Cameo Island. The bar here serves cocktails, cold beers, and basic food. There’s deck seating, music, and a general atmosphere of relaxed celebration. On peak summer evenings, it fills up — arrive by 7:30 PM to get a good spot before sunset. The timing of the sun hitting the horizon varies through the season but is typically between 7:45 PM (June) and 6:45 PM (September).
After sunset, many people swim back across the narrow channel between the island and the mainland beach. It’s barely 30 metres — a minute’s swim. Then it’s warm sand and stars.
Getting There
From Zakynthos Town, drive south toward Laganas on the main road. At Laganas, follow signs for Agios Sostis — it’s a further 5 kilometres east along the bay. Total drive: around 20 minutes. Plentiful parking. Buses from Zakynthos Town stop at Laganas, from where a short taxi or walk gets you to Agios Sostis.
Best Time to Visit
For swimming: June-September. For sunsets: June-August, when the sun sets directly over the water in alignment with the island’s western orientation. For the full Cameo experience: arrive at 7 PM, stay until 9 PM. Bring a camera but don’t spend all of it behind a screen — some moments deserve to be lived rather than photographed.
