What’s Happening
Zakynthos International Airport “Dionysios Solomos” (ZTH) is undergoing a major runway reconstruction as part of Fraport Greece’s fourth phase of infrastructure upgrades across eight regional airports. From February 2 to February 16, 2026, the airport runway will be completely reconstructed, requiring a temporary suspension of all commercial and private flights.
This upgrade is part of a broader €200 million investment by Fraport Greece to modernize the regional airports it operates across Greece, including those on Corfu, Kefalonia, Rhodes, Mykonos, and Santorini.
What’s Being Upgraded
The works at Zakynthos Airport include:
- Complete runway resurfacing with modern materials for improved safety
- Airside pavement improvements across taxiways and apron areas
- Terminal refurbishment — including new check-in counters and security lanes
- New fire station to meet updated safety standards
- Air traffic control tower modernization
- Reorganized apron area, landside roads, and parking
Impact on Travelers
Travelers with flights scheduled during the closure period should:
- Check with their airline for rebooking options or schedule changes
- Consider alternative airports: Kefalonia (EFL) is the nearest, with ferry connections to Zakynthos
- The Kyllini-Zakynthos ferry route operates year-round as an alternative for reaching the island
Looking Ahead
The runway upgrade ensures Zakynthos Airport is ready for the demanding 2026 tourism season. During peak summer months, ZTH handles hundreds of charter flights weekly from across Europe. The improved infrastructure will support higher traffic volumes with better safety standards and a more comfortable passenger experience.
This investment signals confidence in Zakynthos’ continued growth as a premier European holiday destination.
